My Favorite Children's Book

The children's book I chose was The Little Engine That Could.  This book has been a favorite of mine every since I began teaching back in 1994.  Every year, each child in our Pre-K classrooms were given a copy of this book as a Christmas gift donated by a public official.  I love this book because it teaches the children the value of hard work.  In this book a little blue engine tries to help a larger engine that breaks down in the courtyard.  Even though this engine is very small she agrees to try and pull the cars over the mountain so the little boys and girls will have a good Christmas.  She encourages herself by repeating and chanting "I think I can, I think I  can... to overcome a seemingly impossible task.  After much effort, the little engine makes it over the mountain and delivers the toys to all the little boys and girls.  In the end,  she tells herself "I thought I could, I thought I could"... giving herself confirmation of her abilities.  Children know their own capabilities without us even giving them motivation.
